New Book ÒVoices of AlcoholismÓ
Gives Voice to Silent Disease
-- [KIM MALLIN, LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES STORY IN
ANTHOLOGY]--
[Charleston,
SC] –Alcoholism is a disease that affects millions of
American individuals and their families. But there are no pink ribbons, no
marathons, no celebrity fundraisers to raise awareness of its impact. The social stigma associated with this nation-wide
epidemic often prevents victims and their families from even seeking help or
speaking out. Until now. Voices of Alcoholism:
The Healing Companion: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength gives dramatic,
poignant voice to this disease and honors all of those who have survived it.
More Than 40 Intimate, True Stories
Along
with Kim MallinÕs contribution, Voices of Alcoholism features over 40 true stories by
parents, spouses, children and loved ones who speak candidly about the disease
from the first drink through the triumph of recovery. Together with essays by renowned
medical experts and advocates including Joseph A. Califano, Jr., former
Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, these
tales of courage, strength and compassion offer heartfelt insight into the
challenges faced—and conquered—by individuals and families in every
community. Dr. Mallin captures this sentiment in her story. ÒGifts donÕt always come
in pretty packages, tied up with big colorful bows. Sometimes they donÕt even
look like gifts at the time. Sometimes they look like the worst things that
could possibly happen, and only with the passage of time does the gift becomes
apparentÉsuch was the case with my alcoholism.Ó
An Epidemic With No Boundaries
The contributors to Voices of Alcoholism describe the human side of being caught up in a
national epidemic of startling proportions:
á Approximately
14 million Americans meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or
alcoholism and more than half of American adults have a close family member who
has experienced alcoholism, according to the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services.
á Twenty-five
percent of children under the age of 18 are exposed to alcohol abuse or alcohol
dependence in the family.
á
Children whose
parents abuse alcohol or drugs are three times more likely to be verbally,
physically or sexually abused.
á
Although drinking by
persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12-20 years drink almost 20
percent of all of the alcohol consumed in the U.S.
